1 undrafted free agent who will make Raiders’ 2024 roster

While most of the buzz for the NFL Draft is reserved for the top of the event, there are always undrafted gems who not only find their way onto rosters but make an impact after doing so. In 2023, there is one Las Vegas Raiders undrafted free agent who has a real chance to fit this bill and make the roster this upcoming season. That player is former South Alabama quarterback Carter Bradley.

Undrafted quarterbacks are not all that uncommon in the NFL. Kurt Warner and Tony Romo are among the biggest of such success stories, but there are more than just them. Just last year, Tyson Bagent went undrafted out of Shepherd College but started two games for the Chicago Bears.

The Raiders shifted their quarterback room this offseason. Jimmy Garappolo and Brian Hoyer left the building and Gardner Minshew entered. But if they want to carry three quarterbacks on their roster, there’s room for an undrafted free agent to make the Raiders’ 53-man roster at that spot.

South Alabama’s Carter Bradley was one of the first undrafted free agents the Raiders signed after the draft. Bradley took the road less traveled on his way to the NFL. That path began at Toledo where he played for four seasons. He was with the Rockets for a while, but he was never a full-fledged starter during his time there. Bradley attempted just 327 passes in his first four collegiate seasons before hitting the transfer portal.

From there, Bradley wound up in Mobile, Alabama, and the South Alabama Jaguars. The Jacksonville, Florida native finally got his chance to be the guy and made the most of it. In 2022, he completed 64.8% of his passes and averaged 7.8 yards per attempt. He finished with totals of 3,336 yards and 28 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions and helped lead the Jaguars to a bowl game.

Bradley returned to Mobile for a sixth season of college football after putting himself on the map a year prior. He kept the good times rolling. Bradley’s numbers weren’t as gaudy from a total standpoint in 2023, however. He put up 2,660 yards and 19 touchdowns to seven interceptions. But, he did up his completion percentage to 67.8% and his yards per attempt average to 8.2.

Maybe the highlight of Bradley’s career came in Week 3. South Alabama not only traveled to Stillwater to take on Oklahoma State, but they whooped them. Bradley was 10-16 in that game off 152 yards and two touchdowns with plenty of big-time throws. That performance, along with his Senior Bowl invite he’d receive after the season, proved that he can play with the big boys too.

The situation in Las Vegas

The Raiders currently have two quarterbacks who should be considered locks to make the roster. That would be Minshew and Aidan O’Connell, who will be competing for the starting gig. But after those two, Las Vegas’ depth is barren at the quarterback position. Bradley and former Baltimore Raven Anthony Brown Jr. round out the Raiders’ quarterback room.

Brown Jr. has two years of NFL experience under his belt, but his NFL career hasn’t exactly been one to write home about. He’s attempted 49 passes in his career and 44 of those came in a meaningless game for the Ravens in Week 18 of the 2022 season. Brown was 19-44 for 286 yards and threw two interceptions in that game.

The Raiders carried three quarterbacks on their roster last season. If they were to follow suit this year, then Bradley’s path to being one of the three is not arduous. He found a good landing spot for himself in Las Vegas and should make their roster as a result.
