Roberto De Zerbi took charge of his final Brighton game yesterday against Manchester United, and now he will spend a few days by the phone hoping for a call from his beloved AC Milan.

According to this morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below), De Zerbi is now free to pick his own future and after a period of rest he will be ready to jump into his next challenge, one that he hopes could see him return to the club where it all started.

What has changed

When Milan tested the waters initially, De Zerbi was a coach under contract until 2026 and, above all, protected by a release clause of €15m. Things have changed in the last 48 hours, given the English club and the Brescia manager announced their divorce.

De Zerbi himself underlined that there is no agreement in place with another club and that is not the reason for his departure. Instead, the ex-Sassuolo boss is waiting for a call, the right project, and then he will evaluate.

It is in this context that Milan’s name must pop up, because De Zerbi has never hidden his attachment to the club and has admitted they have a very special place in his heard.

“It’s not a normal club, I grew up with the Rossoneri. I will be grateful to Milan for the rest of my life,” De Zerbi said on more than one occasion.
